Scott Sportster Hybrid Bike Range Review Part 1
The Scott Sportster range of performance hybrid bikes is large, and can be confusing when first encountered. In this first part we’ll cover the Sportster 60, 55, 50 and 40, the less expensive part of the range.
First off, it’s useful to point out that the higher specification models have the lower model numbers, and vice versa. Consequently the Sportster 60 is the cheapest bike in the range, and the 40 the most expensive in this group.
All four are available in mens and womens versions – each version of a particular model differing in:-
· Frame geometry.
· Handlebar – the womens version being a bit longer and having a bit more bend.
· Saddle – for obvious reasons…
Everything else – components, weight, price etc is identical between the mens and womens versions of each model. Upgrades to gears, brakes and front fork are the main things to look at when deciding between the different models.
All the bikes in the Scott Sportster range share the same frame, in 6061 aluminium. All the frame tubing is double-butted, and the taper on the top tube and down tube is extremely nice. The paintwork and graphics are superb and there’s enough clearance to fit mudguards and fittings for pannier racks if you want.
Sportster 60. – the entry level bike of the Sportster range. It’s the only Sportster to have a steel front fork. The geartrain components are all basic Shimano Tourney and Acera.. Thee are 21 gears on this model, selected with EZ Fire shifters by Shimano. These are simple to use, clicking up and down the gears using the thumb and forefinger levers, the selected gear being shown in the indicator window. The shifters are integrated with the brake levers, operating Scott’s own V-brakes.
The mens and womens versions have different handlebars. They are both aluminium but the womens bars are longer with more bend. There is no compromise on quality in the saddles either, as the two styles of saddle are fitted to all the bikes in the range.
The semi-slick tyres are ideal for hybrid riding. At 37mm they are wide enough and have enough grip for off-road riding, but at the same time low rolling resistance for on the road.
The flat pedals and chainguard will suit most people – as most cycling is done in ordinary clothes and shoes. No need for lycra and cleats.
Weighing 12.4 kg it is possible to buy a lighter bike. But the build quality and specifications are excellent – it’s extremely tough. It’s a fantastic value Scott bike.
Sportster 50. This is the next step up. In nearly all aspects this is the same as the 60. The frame, wheels, tyres and handlebars remain the same. Two notable upgrades are seen. First of these is the suspension fork, ideal for coping with paths and tracks. The second is the cassette, an 8-speed group giving 24 gears. There’s no change to the derailleurs though. A third, fairly minor change is to slightly better pedals.
At 13.2 kg the 50 is a bit heavier than the 60, due to the forks. However I think that the upgrades to fork and gears are well worth the extra money.
Sportster 55. The next bike in the range shows only one change compared to the 50 – the brakes. The 55 has mechanical disc brakes by Shimano in place of the V-brakes fitted to the other models. Disc brakes will be particularly useful as they keep the braking surfaces out of the mud and grit. Otherwise the 55 shares the same components as the 50. The upgrade to discs will cost you only a little more.
Sportster 40. In the same way as the 55 is more suitable for off road riding, so the 40 will appeal more to those who do most of their cycling on the road. The tyres are narrower, at 35mm. These, along with the upgraded front fork will improve the abilities of the bike on the road. Both gear mechs are better quality. A 9-speed cassette now gives the bike 27 gears. The 40 reverts to V-brakes giving a saving in weight. Don’t forget though that this bike is still able to take you off road quite happily.
There’s a bit of a jump in price as a result of these upgrades. This has a level of specification however that would be hard to find elsewhere at that sort of price. It’s fantastic value.
So any Scott Sportster review will demonstrate that no matter what your budget, or what type of riding turns you on, there’s a bike in the Sportster range to suit.
