The Surly Cross Check is an amazingly versatile bike. In fact versatility is the name of the game with the Cross Check. What I’ve heard is that it was actually only the third frame that Suly ever sold – must be true I guess. Fact is, it ain’t changed much since then. Okay, so they’ve added mid-blade eyelets to the fork for mounting a front rack. But who cold blame ‘em for that – you got a good idea, you’d act on it wouldn’t you?.
The bike can be built with gears or as a single speed or fixed-gear. You wouldn’t call this a touring bike but it’s fine for dealing with light touring loads okay. The front rack will help a lot with that too.
Built with longevity in mind, it’s also super comfortable. Everyone whose ever ridden this bike says it handles like a dream. It’s like having a loyal servant – who can double up as a soldier.
It’s a very strong frame. But the ride is also very comfortable. The simple fact is that this is a great bike for getting you to work. It makes your journeys in and out of town a total pleasure.” But equally, the Surly Cross Check will take you across country too, and is surprisingly good at climbing hills.
Surly have made it easy to fit a rack and fender, as there are front and rear eyelets. The cross-check is in no way light light – but nor should it be. It’s pointless to compare it to an aluminum/carbon cross bike. They are light years apart. But one thing that has been said about the Surly Cross check, and we agree: “It’s the Swiss Army Knife of bikes.”
